On-site Grinding of Cylinder Block, Cylinder Liner, and Cylinder Cover - Up to 1200 mm
Repair Without Disassembly: Precision In-Situ Grinding Solutions in Port or Underway
The mating surfaces of main components such as the cylinder block, liner, and cover, which ensure the engine’s combustion chamber sealing, are the fundamental building blocks for engine health. Deformations and corrosion on these critical surfaces, resulting from overheating, water leakage, or prolonged operation, lead to compression and water leaks, signaling major failures. At İntermak, we bring workshop precision directly to your engine room with our in-situ grinding service, eliminating the enormous time and cost burden of dismantling these massive parts from the vessel. We have the capacity to offer this service even on the largest engines, up to 1200 mm in diameter.
- Assessment and Disassembly: The process begins with our expert team’s arrival at your vessel with portable laser measurement and precision straight-edge equipment. The current condition of the damaged surface is precisely measured by creating a topographical map of the surface. This assessment clearly reveals the extent of warping, undulation, and corrosion on the surface and determines how much material needs to be removed. In this service, disassembly only means removing surrounding components that obstruct access to the grinding surface (e.g., removing the cover from the block); the engine block itself does not need to be removed from its place.
- Analysis and Component Inspection: The data obtained from the measurement is analyzed by our engineers to create the most suitable grinding strategy. All necessary calculations are made to ensure our portable grinding equipment can be perfectly mounted relative to the cylinder centers or reference surfaces. The analysis aims to achieve the surface flatness and quality required by the manufacturer with minimum material loss.
- Repair and Assembly: Following the analysis, our specially designed portable circular grinding machine is mounted directly onto the engine block or component using laser alignment systems. After a flawless setup, the high-speed grinding unit begins to remove material from the surface with micron-level precision. The process continues in a controlled manner until the surface is completely cleaned and reaches the flatness tolerances and surface roughness (Ra) value specified by the manufacturer.
- Testing and Delivery: After the grinding process is completed, the surface quality undergoes a final inspection. The entire surface is re-measured using laser measurement devices and precision straight-edges to confirm that the achieved flatness is within manufacturer standards. If necessary, a “bluing” test (contact blue test) is applied to verify full surface contact. Following the successful completion of these tests, the perfected surface is handed over to the vessel’s crew, ready for the assembly of the engine’s other components.
- Comprehensive Reporting: A detailed service report is issued for every completed on-site grinding project. This report includes all laser measurement results from before and after the procedure, topographical maps of the surface, photographs taken during the operation, and the final surface quality values achieved. This report is an official document, certifying the quality of the work and the surface’s compliance with standards, to be presented to classification societies and kept in the ship’s archive.
